Friends in the front yard

Leaving for work earlier in the morning
Returning home after dark
Leaning over the computer on holidays
Lost a thousand smiles of these friends!

World Environment Day Greetings

Rather than a hype of celebrations, protecting environment should become an innate culture of each individual.

How many trees would you plant today? much travelling time would you reduce from today in a vehicle running on carbon-based fuel ? restraint would you be from today in purchasing things other than essential ones?

Happy world environment day!

Aditi's Kochi

Aditi's Kochi

Short Story: P. Anil Prasad

Aditi hails from a beautiful village called Dayalpur, which is in the Jalandhar district of Punjab. When she was studying for her first year under graduation in the Government College Tehang, her family had moved to Kochi in Kerala as her father Ranjit Singh wanted to takeover a wholesale store for electronic equipment spare-parts run by his eldest bother Teja Singh consequent on his death. Teja Singh was unmarried. During that time Ranjit Singh was a high school teacher in Dayalpur. Since Ranjit's elder brother was settled in Canada, it became Ranjit's sole discretion to decide on the future of Teja's business establishment, which was well known in north Kerala. Family and friends advised Ranjit against the closure of that very successful and profitable business. Thus after much deliberations, Ranjit decided to resign his teacher's job to takeover the business which was run with much passion by Teja. Another reason for Ranji…

The Transit Passenger

The Transit Passenger An Open Short Story by P. Anil Prasad

I am a transit passenger. I landed at the terminal three of this airport just twenty minutes ago and I have to go to terminal five for my connection flight. I ensured I got my passport back from the emigration counter. At times people forget it at the counters. Many times I have witnessed the plight of such people. I have more than enough time in this airport, because the connection flight has been delayed for six hours. I have a twelve hours transit visa stamped in my passport, using that I can roam round the city. But the climate is too cold. Therefore I do not like to go out. I will roam round inside this very large airport. There is nothing in my hand bag other than a set of dress and a tab. Therefore I can freely walk. Moreover it will save me from the boredom of waiting long hours at the departure gate. Common, let us walk.

My mobile seems to be ringing. After the security check in the earlier airport I did not take it ou…

On Community Colleges

For the past few months, I have been learning about Community Colleges, since I am mandated to establish community colleges as part of my present project. Community Colleges have different shapes and mandates in different parts of the world. I would like to share the concept of a community college in my mind to trigger some discussions on the topic for getting your invaluable inputs.

By the name itself, community colleges are mandated to place community at the central position. It also means that community participation is highly essential in managing community colleges. It will not work by just running an institution in favour of the community – such institutions will very soon become like any other regular academic institution as it is a passive approach.

How do community colleges differ from other academic institutions? I believe, community colleges should be able to cater to the learning needs of the local community for living in harmony and working for further prosperity. It w…

The Class Act by Debashis Chatterjee

It was almost one and half year ago I met Prof. Dr. Debashis Chatterjee along with Dr. Priya Nair at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK). It was during a team management training for the Senior Programme Managers of Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) organized by my division – Lifelong Learning. I reached IIMK to deliver introductory address in the opening session of the training programme. After the training has formally commenced, Dr. Priya proposed to meet Dr. Debashis Chatterjee who was then the director of IIMK.
While entering his office along with Dr. Priya, I was expecting a typical management guy in full formal suit. To my surprise I saw there a very humble person in simple attire and with a solemn smile on the face. His conversation was like a pious guru. We discussed about the training and development needs in government and Dr. Debashis shared his wonderful experiences. At the end of our visit he gave me another surprise – 'The Class Act, …

An energy source is stopped; demise of the beloved poet and lyricist ONV

It is in the rhythm of language and music,
by the flow of energy out of it,
lives are melded into a society.
Such an energy source is stopped.

Demise of the beloved poet and lyricist ONV

Social Systems for the Cyberspace; organic development of systems

Starting from the networking needs of the military sixty decades back, the Cyberspace was evolving and self-developing in an organic way. The history of computer networking starts with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of networking was called packet networking and it originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, Great Britain, and France. These efforts got greater purpose when the US Department of Defence awarded contracts for packet network systems, including the development of the ARPANET (which would become the first network to use the Internet Protocol.) during 1960s.

When the first message was sent over the ARPANET from Professor Leonard Kleinrock's laboratory at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to the second network node at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), nobody might have realized that it was the Big Bang and the Cyberspace was created!

Right from the moment of origin, developments in the Cyber…

Social systems for the Cyberspace; the social media

In the last blog I wrote about the open society models of wikis, especially the wikipedia. The policies and guidelines are instrumental to develop and maintain the virtual society on wikipedia. In this blog, I would like to write about the Cyberspace societies being nurtured by the social networking websites, or Social Media, as we call them together nowadays.  The social media includes blogs, business networks, enterprise social networks, forums, microblogs, photo sharing, products/services review, social bookmarking, social gaming, social networks, video sharing and more. As per a wikipedia article 'A social networking service (also social networking site or SNS) is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who share similar interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections'. Early social networking on the World Wide Web began in the form of generalized online communities such as (1995), Geocities (1994) and (1995)…

Social Systems for the Cyberspace; wiki the first open society in the virtual world

As we discussed in the earlier blog on the need of the social systems for the Cyberspace, the virtual world is no more that virtual and the need for stable social systems in the Cyberspace is tremendously high.

Perhaps the first open public space in the Cyberspace that facilitated the development of a well structured society is the world of wiki. Later Wikipedia revolutionised this phenomenal growth with 111666 active members in the English Wikipedia (though it has 27334636 registered members only 111666 have edited the pages in the last 30 days) and 5,065,228 articles. It averages 800 new articles per day. The virtual community of wikipedians is nurtured by wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

The policies of wikipedia are developed and maintained chiefly under six categories, viz Content, Conduct, Deletion, Enforcement, Legal, and Procedural. The appropriateness, correctness, authenticity, legal compliances, regular development etc of the wikipedia community as well as its contrib…

Social Systems for the Cyberspace

While writing the first two volumes of Imanofutu, one of the serious thoughts haunted me the need of well structured social systems in the cyberspace for the Imanofuteans. The starting point of the plot was the life in Imanofutu during the last quarter of the twenty first century. Since the climate change related issues had made the normal life in the open air almost impossible, the Cyberspace had become the main living space for the Imanofuteans. Starting from banking to schooling, everything has been migrated to the cyberspace. Thus they established Netizen's Community Networks (NCNs), which ensured access to and safety in the cyberspace for all by prudent technologies, definite laws and community ethics.
While returning from Imanofutu to our real world, there also we see millions of people have already started to live their real life in the virtual world! Yes, we are forced to admit that virtual world is not that virtual now. Of course, not chiefly because of environmental issu…

The destroyer

The following is a poem inluded in the Volume 1 of the 'Imanofutu' fiction series titled 'IMANOFUTU; A 21 Cy Portrait' . In the fiction it is written and recited by a young poet, who is very disappointed and anxious about the panic efforts taken by people to escape from the clutches of the environmental issues towards the end of the 21st century. 'The under earth and under sea hideouts' refer to the Under Ground Living Space (UGL Space) and Under Sea Living Space initiatives of the Imanofutu government. Free digital copy of the fiction is available on Google Books and it can also be downloaded from
“You have been reckless exploiters Who plundered nature for disasters That you thought fortunes.
Hey men! You have spoiled the blues And I don’t have blue skies now, I don’t have white mountains I don’t have green valleys I don’t have serene air Hey men! You are the arch destroyer!
Now you seek hideouts everywhere Under the earth, under the sea, The…

Open Fiction

I have been writing and self-publishing fictions with open license for the last few years without least care to what have been happening in the realm of fiction writing, purely based on philanthropic concerns. I used to add the genre as 'open fiction'.  Then, a few months back, quite accidentally, I happened to read a blog by Joschua Fink, a student of screen-writing at the German Film- and Television Academy Berlin, titled "Why we all write Science Fiction- A short overview about all open source novels ever written." In the blog he wrote that there are novels published under creative commons license, but almost all of them  disallow either modification or commercial use, which are both integral freedoms in the Definition of Free Cultural Works. He continued “If we sort them out, what remains left to be called open source? Just very few. Few enough to count them with the digits of a single hand”. He lists four writers and one among them is myself (with Imanofutu). O…
