SEEK 15 and the SEEK model of conclave design

Skill Enterprise Engagement for Empowering Kerala (SEEK) is emerging as a very important biannual conclave of all stakeholders related to the  skill development ecosystem with its first successful conduct in 2013 and now the second instance on 16th and 17th of December 2015.
The principal organizer of the event is the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP), a joint skill development initiative of Higher and General Education Departments, Government of Kerala in India. The objective of the ASAP is to provide additional skill training to the students studying at Higher Secondary Schools and the Arts and Science colleges to enhance their employment opportunities as well as their confidence and initiative to become successful individuals and responsible citizens.

In 2013 National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) was the conclave partner. For SEEK 15, Asian Development Bank (ADB) was the partner.

While SEEK13  chiefly focused on unveiling the skill development opportunities in K…

OER for Inclusive Development; identifying Challenges, Addressing Opportunities – National Consultation

CEMCA, UNESCO and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) jointly organized the national consultation on ‘OER for Inclusive Development; identifying Challenges, Addressing Opportunities’ at the JNU Convention Centre on 1st and 2nd December 2015.

The discussions were based on the following themes:
Examining the benefits and implications of the National Mission on Education Through ICT – NMEICT’s open licensing policy guidelinesExamining good practices and case studies on OER-based learningExploring the role of digital libraries vis-à-vis OER initiativesAdapting existing institutional OER policiesDeveloping and applying frameworks to assess the quality of OEROER for persons with disabilitiesOER for skill development
The overall feel I got was that the OER movement has to enter into a concerted, targeted and action oriented second phase of its implementation. Now, the OER ecosystem, in general, has good policies, models, content repositories and technology that can be repurposed and used. I…

Neither she nor he; it's me - new CC-BY-SA open fiction

It was while writing the synopsis for
Imanofutu Vol.4, I was entangled with
the thoughts about individuals who want to
live beyond their gender identities.
This novel introduces four  such characters
who shed their gender identities
because of their strong belief that
gender identity creates uneasiness and
unnecessary ego clashes in their lives.
After freed themselves from the gender clutches,
they work for the uplift of single mothers and
transgender and neutral gender individuals,
of course, by  facing a lot of challenges.
Hope you will like their story.

Wick irrigation for farming; one of the cheapest technologies to combat climate change

Recently I read a report in a daily about how an agriculture scientist managed her own terrace farming from drying out during her family vacation tour using wick irrigation (thiri nana in Malayalam). The report said that the scientist collected a few mineral water bottles, cut it suitably and put thick wicks in each bottle and placed the bottles below the grow bags which were placed in metal stands and connected the top end of the wick into the soil in the grow bag through the bottom. Now the remaining part of the irrigation has been managed perfectly by the capillary rise principle during her entire fifteen day vacation! When she came back, all her plants were fresh, grew further, someone flowered and all were fluttering very happily in the breeze. The plants didn’t felt the absence of their mentor! Though the news did not provide any pictures of the arrangement, I am trying to draw here what I conceived while reading it.

Since water will remain in the bottom layer of the soil in the…

ASAP leaps to new horizons through Smart India initiative

The relevance of vocational courses to the changing industry, employment opportunities for those who complete vocational courses and stigma towards vocational courses are some of the major unresolved issues in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system. For the last few weeks, UNESCO’s UNEVOC online forum has been discussing this hot topic.
Now, Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP), an initiative of Higher Education Department, Government of Kerala in India, presents a promising way to address the above issue by bringing in entrepreneurship development as a strong and influential component of vocational education and training.
It is not just a theory now. The Kannur District team of ASAP just started to pilot it. They chose Self Help Group (SHG) model for this pilot phase. The SHG model is always a safer mode for the group of young entrepreneurs to start off. As they progress and get groomed, they can easily switch over to a formal company set up. The Kan…
