TVET; Challenges

The greatest challenge he world faces today with respect to the implementation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)  is that though there is tremendous fund flow into TVET programmes in general, it is seldom able to effectively reduce the struggles of the industry to find out quality workforce.

Assessing skill gaps and implementation of programmes to reduce the identified gaps is an ideal scenario. But the success stories yet to come for encouraging the world to follow this ideal case scenario. More over the rationality of the skill gap studies are also being challenged most often.

At present TVET is handled by either academicians   or trainers from outside the academecia. Unfortunately the lost link is the Industry. For a sustainable solution to capacitate the TVET systems across the world to successfully face the challenges that comes its way, industry should become an active player in the TVET ecosystem.

The TVET ecosystem should include all the stake holders in the process flow like students, academicians, non-academic trainers, the employer industries etc. This kind of system revamping has already been initiated in counties that formed sector skill councils to lead the TVET in the correct direction. But these kinds of initial mechanisms are able to engage industry largely in consultative meetings alone.  Though it is good for a beginning, further advancement is required for yielding desired outputs.

Industry should become a working partner in the TVET ecosystem. They should communicate actual skill requirement and trigger appropriate programme development, delivery and assessment in way that provide them confidence to recruit the students come out of the system. If industries would seriously consider the TVET system as an extension of their T&D function both the TVET system and the industry will be benefitted. It is the right place for them to effectively utilize their training and development as well as corporate social responsibility funds.
