OpenMeetings; a wonderful free and open source video conferencing solution

During last July (2013) , while searching for a free and open source video conferencing solution for a Moodle Learning Management System (www.moodle.org), it was accidently I come across ‘Open Meetings’.  It is a free and open source solution from the Apache family (http://openmeetings.apache.org/). Even though I was not able to locate any acquaintance locally who has used OpenMeetings, I decided to experiment it. The OpenMeetings installation and Moodle integration guidelines got from the internet have facilitated trouble free installation and integration.

At our project (www.asapkerala.gov.in) we found it as a wonderful application, though there were some issues with sound streaming like howling sound while no headphone is used, some streaming issues etc. With the latest release of OpenMeetings all those issues are found to be solved.

Openmeetings provides video conferencing, instant messaging, white board, collaborative document editing and other groupware tools using API functions of the Red5 Streaming Server for Remoting and Streaming. In our experience it excels many priced/proprietary  solutions. At present apart from virtual learning purposes, we are also effectively using it for virtual single and group meetings with our field professionals.

Try it! Definitely you will love it!

  1. That's a good job done by implementing a Video Conference solution for moodle learning. It would have helped you to bring out good solutions apart from the risks of meeting multiple people.
