"Nothing happens in the universe without reason. Widespread lifestyles and eating habits can become (among many) reasons that trigger biological evolution, I believe."

"In my wild thoughts [or intuitions? :) ], I suspect ever increasing occurrences of cancers in human beings as an early indication of an impending strong wave of biological evolution."

"When the world population would touch 10 billion mark towards the end of the current century itself, the only powerful tools in our hands to meet the demand for higher education would be OER and ODL."

"Availability of effective systems to make use of existing OERs and the ability to further build on it would be crucial factors in leading future higher education systems to success."

"Man painfully tries to freeze the effects of natural changes by artificially creating the living environments that he thinks comfortable. Does it wide-open the way to extinction? I am thinking about a possible (or imminent?) adaptation crisis among the human beings."

" In the case of all development projects, we have to converge the efforts being put in and funds being pumped into by various national and international agencies to facilitate a concerted effort, only that can ensure success and sustainability."

" Higher Education sector has a lot to learn from the Corporate sector on the effective implementation of eLearning systems."

" When we go back through the time line, to the maximum extent our information and thereafter imagination can take us, we see that, during those days knowledge acquisition happened in open environment and flourished through collaboration. Therefore open learning and its collaborative development are natural ways, and hence there is no question about their success or sustainability. But what happened to us is we are now far away from that natural ways, and the present generation has to learn to retrieve such skills. Of course, we additionally require some more measures and frameworks to measure the learning process as well as to ensure quality that are being demanded by the present living situations. We have promising technologies and techniques in hand to pursue this process."

" High launching price of new technologies is a usual thing. However, as years pass, such technologies become cheaper and easily accessible. Does this transition happen in healthcare sector also?"

Saturday, May 21, 2011
" I think further concerted efforts are required in HR planning and R&D in health care. Since environmental issues are accumulating day-by-day paving way for new diseases and increased occurrence of existing ones, the demand-supply-gap in HR as well as Equipments in health care sector might become drastic in the years to come. We may require more devoted contingents of well trained physicians and simpler and low-cost technologies and equipments. Can’t we think of an R&D revolution for making medicine and medical technologies low-cost and easily accessible? We should think about open technologies as well."

" I am convinced that Nuclear Energy is a reliable source of energy. However we cannot help but raise our eyebrows when we think about Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and now Fukushima accidents. I am not a scientist, still I would like to ask the Nuclear Science World “Hi, can we have Radiation Absorption and Neutralization Stations?" If your answer is 'YES' I would request you to do it fast. If your answer is 'NO', still my request won't change."

"It is quite common that first launching of technology devices, especially in places with high density of population, generates a public sentiment that the new system is either improper or inadequate. In certain cases perseverance alone will help people to overcome this situation. But in other cases corrective actions will be necessary. The problem need not necessarily be with the technology, where as, in most cases the villain is the inadequacies in the strategies that are being deployed to develop and maintain the new systems. Failures in the part of the authorities to create awareness as well as train people in using the new system add oil to the flame. Sudden/premature and massive implementation of technology to replace manual systems will be like massive cardiac arrest. Well planned and phased implementation with community participation will ensure success. It points to the need of proper training to implement e-governance initiatives – whether in academic or administrative or commercial establishments.

"I think, education is embracing ICT tools more and more strongly all over the globe. It is the need of the hour in fact. We have to establish more tested and reliable systems in place to overcome the pressures from over population (which is feared to cross 10 billion by 2050), climate change etc. Expecting online learning to adore the main stream position of education seems to be not a wild dream any more Definitely, now it is not an issue of pedagogical principles alone, where as it is greatly becoming a means for existence as decades pass.

On adaptation of natural changes

"In the millions of years of history, man has overcome drastic changes in the living environments by naturally adjusting himself with the changes. But today, the fortress of luxuries that we built recklessly around us has made the adaptation of natural changes quite impossible."

On the legal frameworks for OER

"Researches should be conducted to the legal frameworks in support of OER (national/international legislations - both enacted and initiated, policies, treaties etc ) . The efforts put in by policy makers and legislators for the promotion of OER/Open Text Books should be identified and popularized so that it would facilitate further legislation in favour of OER in various parts of the world."

" There are many ways you can effectively contribute for environment protection. Can you decide today itself that you shall not use motor vehicles for travels below two k.m, as long as you are healthy and weathers are not too bad? You will be free to occasionally breach it for emergency. As responsible individuals you may also ensure that authorities build and maintain safe walk ways for you"

"I think that "The 1billionhungry project" of Food and Agricultural Organization of UN is really a need of the time and a strong concern for the future, especially when the early symptoms of global warming are visibly felt. This year's message is strong, in fact, a voice of anger "1,000,000,000 People live in chronic hunger and I'M MAD AS HELL". Let us sign the petition to end hunger and stand in solidarity with FAO in this great venture."

"In the Cyberspace, there is acute shortage of open and free reusable statistical data and graphs on various aspects of OER , ODL, ODL using OER etc. OER may be a comparatively younger child of education sector, but it has sufficiently grown up to trigger statistical studies. Easy access to such studies and data would definitely enhance the reliability and adaption/adoption of OER and ODL using OER and ODL in general, which is the gravest need of the time and people."

"We all know that e-governance and related online services can substantially facilitate protection of environment in numerous ways. I think this aspect of e-governance has to be highlighted as one of the effective followup for the Copenhagen Accord, so that e-governance as well as planet saving initiatives all over the world would get additional momentum."

"A Consortium of all Nations, for developing and popularizing alternative PLANET friendly open technologies in place of existing technologies that are hazardous, is very much required. We may prefer open technologies for fast implementation and fine tuning of the same by all those volunteer to support. Open technologies will also avoid wastage of valuable resources by way of reinventing the wheel again and again. All nations in the world would be free to adopt and adapt such technologies for localized requirements"

"If the future environmental situations would force the world population to queue up for the daily ration of oxygen supply, floating over water and wearing heavy insulated suits, all prosperity would mean nothing but a curse. Value of money will be lost once the PLANET is sick. We do not want this nightmare to happen"

"In livelihood sector OERs should be able to improve the living situations directly. It should reach the needy in their language and it should be considerate to their living environments so that it would become an integral part of their life. The interaction between the needy people and OERs should become quite natural so that both will be changing for improvements on a regular basis."

Saturday, November 14, 2009

"In livelihood sector, OERs, whether online or printed, still mean just a repository! Being built and used by academicians and students (for academic purposes) in large. It is the sad part of it!"

Wayanad; everlasting memories of a travel

Wayanad, a northern district of Kerala state (my state) in India is always a passion for our friend Nelson, who has worked there for many years before joining us in Thiruvananthapuram, the State Head Quarters of Kerala. Through his narrations we (the other friends) have also got attracted to the place. Usually every year, we conduct two-three days trekking tour. This time we have decided to select Wayanad. Anil Kumar, Anoop, Nelson, Dileep, Sabu, Gopikrishnan and me (Anil Prasad) arrived at Kalpetta, the head quarters of Wayanad district in the misty and cold early morning of 9th October, 2009 by KSRTC bus from Kozhikode. We were travelling the whole night from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikoe by train. Another friend Asokan would join as there. Asokan would also arrange a rented van for our local trips. After having tea from a small shop in front of the Kalpetta Civil Station, we went to the PWD Rest House to freshen up and to take breakfast. By 11 a.m the entire team got ready for the…

Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP), Kerala

Higher Education, General Education and Local Self Government Departments of Kerala State Government in India have jointly launched an Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) as part of State Skill Development Programme to enhance the employability of students passing out of Higher Secondary Schools (+2) as well as Arts and Science Colleges in the state.
Historically Kerala has been a prominent supplier of skilled human resource to the rest of the world. But now, in accordance with the requirements of the fast changing world, though Kerala has an amazing pool of Human Resource, the overall employability is calculated below twenty five percent, the ASAP project document says.
Additional Skill Acquisition Programme has been conceived as an effective remedy for this situation. The whole idea is that the students will be given skill training, in addition to their regular academic programme/curriculum, in the crucial sectors as being demanded by the Industry. These skill training w…

A trip to Sundarbans

It was a fine Friday of 29th May 2009, the last day of the 5 day ‘Learning for Content and Community Building Workshop’ that I was facilitating for Commonwealth of Learning in association with Rupantar, a leading NGO, in Khulna, Bangaldesh. The fifth day was for field trip and casual discussions; a community building exercise.
In the morning, around 8 AM, Shaikh Abdul Halim, Co-ordinator of the workshop along with Md.Saifuddin Rony, Rohima, Maksuda Akther, Tauhid Alam and Md.Shafiqul Shaikh came to Hotel Western Inn International, where I was staying in Khulna, in a Van driven by our friend Jewel.

We planned Sundarbans as the first destination of the trip, and during the return journey we would also visit some places of historical importance.

The Sundarbans (Bengali: Shundorbôn) is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world. The name Sundarban can be literally translated as "beautiful jungle" or "beautiful forest" in the Bengal…
